Biography
Sean Gibbons graduated from Manchester University in the UK in 1995 and is an international expert in therapeutic exercise. He shares his time between clinical practice, teaching and research. In his research, he has developed “Motor Behavior Therapy”. This is a clinical reasoning framework for the personalized management of musculoskeletal pain. It helps predict what therapy is best for the each individual person. The Key Themes are:
- Sub-classify the Mechanisms driving the pain
- Identify the Causation of these and the Barriers to rehabilitation
- Use Individualization in rehabilitation
It has been applied to low back pain, concussion, whiplash associated disorders, chronic pain and sports injuries. It is the most comprehensive rehabilitation model in musculoskeletal medicine and provides a rehabilitation option for all musculoskeletal pain clients.
Sean is continually striving to make the rehabilitation process better. He has developed numerous new interventions for those who do not respond to traditional therapy. Approximately 70% of his caseload have seen more than ten healthcare practitioners.
His current research is on:
- the identification of minor nerve injuries in Concussion and Whiplash Associated Disorders
- screening for low grade systemic inflammation and the development of treatments
- diagnosis and causation of central sensitization and body imagery pain (non mechanical chronic pain)
- the validity of strength assessments
He continues to collaborate on projects to further test the sub-classification model he developed and Motor Behavior Therapy.
Sean has presented his research at national and international conferences and has several journal publications and book chapters on related topics. He lectures internationally on specific therapeutic exercise for musculoskeletal pain. His courses and lectures are extremely popular around the world. Motor Behavior Therapy is very popular because it makes the complexity of pain and rehabilitation much easier to work through and provides a rehabilitation direction for everyone. When not working and traveling, he enjoys the outdoors. He is a former rugby player and runner so maintains an interest in sports injuries and the sports.
